Agha Soltani, a retired primary school teacher and Atefé, his strange, beautiful and stubbornly silent little granddaughter, are in flight from a devastating earthquake that destroyed the city of Bam and all their family. Here begins their adventurous wanderings through the fascinating landscapes of Iran, where child-brides merchants, corrupt Pasdaran and bands of illegal traffickers make for a breathtaking plot. Agha Soltani does not know where he wishes to go, only that he wants to leave the past behind. Along the road they ask a tradesman from Jiroft, Masht Ali, for a lift. Behind his date and pistachio business he hides his dealings with the child-thieving demons of the desert. These are the legendary djiin who laugh during the night, driving the young boys crazy but here they are also organized bands that abduct children for the sex trade. Atafé is kidnapped and taken to Pakistan. After many difficulties the grandfather will embrace her again. I demoni del deserto is an odyssey about the desert, the sea, beauty and humanity. Captivating as a myth yet told like a modern story of our times.
